Aubrey Wilkes Trophy

❤️🖤

The Aubrey Wilkes Memorial Trophy is an annual competition played between local rivals Truro City and Falmouth Town in memory of Cornish football fan Aubrey Wilkes who enjoyed watching the two rivals.

The trophy was bought in Tenerife by Clive Chinn – a good friend of Aubrey – and it had to be dismantled and put in four different suitcases just to get it back to Cornwall!

The first contest between the two sides was in the 1988-1989 season and was played for continuously until the 2001-2002 season, but was reintroduced for the 2009-2010 season and has been played for since.

Since the reintroduction of the trophy, Truro City have only lost twice (2011-2012 & 2018-2019), both occasions at Bickland Park, Falmouth and both occasions Lee Hodges was the manager of Truro City Football Club.

It was on January 3, 1970, that Truro last beat Falmouth Town in the Jewson South-Western League, but on Boxing Day they ended that depressing run of 21 games with this narrow victory over their old rivals. It was a heroic performance by City in atrocious conditions, as they battled through the mud to end Town’s stranglehold over them in the league. A howling wind and a sodden pitch, which rapidly cut up, made skilful football difficult. In the first half, with the elements in their favour, Truro had more of the play, led by player-manager Steve Massey; who had possibly his best game of the season. The Town defence struggled to hold the City striker, who always looked dangerous. As early as the third minute, he forced a good save out of Falmouth keeper Dave Philp from a free-kick and he also set up a good chance for Chris Webb who shot across the goal. Webb then almost caught Philp out with a clever lob after a bad kick out by the keeper. Falmouth rarely threatened, but would have been content to turn around at 0-0 and then take advantage of the conditions. Truro though, got the vital breakthrough after 32 minutes, when Massey combined well with Dave Shatford down the left and his cross was expertly headed home from close range by Sammy Leonce. In the second half, it was Truro who were put under pressure. In the 52nd minute impressive Truro keeper Ian Morris brought off a superb save to deny what seemed a certain goal from Nigel Thwaites’s far-post header. Falmouth substitute Andy Duncan also wasted a good chance and Truro had a let-off when a bad back pass by Mike Tummon was intercepted by Mark Rapsey. He crossed for Gary Harrison, whose shot was cleared off the line. As conditions deteriorated, the game became more and more bogged down in the mud and Truro, with tremendous determination, held on for a famous win. After the game, Truro skipper Graham Bilkey received the Aubrey Wilkes Memorial Cup, given to the winners of the first meeting between Truro and Falmouth each season. Truro were the holders after beating Town in the League Cup last season. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

After what was by their standards, a disappointing season in 1992-93, Falmouth Town confirmed their big improvement in this campaign with a 2-1 victory at Jewson South Western League champions Truro City on Saturday. Having already reached the second round of the FA Vase, Town are also unbeaten in the league after nine games and they now trail leaders Bodmin by seven points with three games in hand. Defensively they look a lot stronger after conceding 51 goals last season and it was their defence which laid the basis of their win at Truro, who had been defending a 100 per cent home record. Former Falmouth player Damian Stevens gave Truro a 17th minute lead with a neat shot, but three minutes later Darren Tallon put the ball planted an attempted back pass past his own keeper Andy Gammon for an own goal which put the sides level. Town began to get on top and what proved to be the winning goal came 19 minutes into the second half, when Jeff Babb turned and fired a left foot low shot past Gammon. It was an advantage that Falmouth’s dominant defence never really looked like surrendering, as they held on for a vital win. After the game outstanding Falmouth skipper Dave Gardner received the Aubrey Wilkes trophy which is awarded to the winning club in the two sides first meeting each season. 1996-1997

Sat 17 Aug 1996 – Falmouth Town (A) L 2-4 (Norman 6, Wherry 11)

Falmouth Town’s new-look team richly deserved the after-match standing ovation from their supporters as they opened their Jewson South-Western League campaign with a thrilling win over champions Truro City on Saturday. Their performance was even more creditable as they had to come from 2-0 down after just 11 minutes to show that their 3-2 victory at Truro in the final of the St Austell Brewery Cup six days earlier was no fluke. They showed tremendous character and resilience to thoroughly deserve all three points and leave City shell-shocked. With each player working hard for the other, new manager David Ball has obviously engendered great team spirit after the departure of so many of last season’s “stars”. It had all started so badly for Falmouth as City stunned them with two quickfire goals. After just six minutes a poor back pass left keeper Steve Taylor in trouble and Justin Norman forced the ball past him to run and score into an empty net. Worse was to follow as five minutes later Taylor was again beaten when City striker Steve Wherry scored with an unstoppable header from Norman’s right wing cross. Falmouth badly needed a quick goal to give themselves any chance and it duly came in the 16th minute. A left wing Andy Wright corner was flicked on by skipper Andrew Street for Lee Cansfield to score a simple close range goal. It was just the boost Falmouth needed when they were in danger of being overrun and they then took the game to Truro, forcing a string of corners which several times almost resulted in a goal. Town, though, did have a let-off just before the break when Norman shot right across the goal with only Taylor to beat. The opening half of the second period was uneventful until an amazing four minute period when Town scored three goals. They drew level in the 68th minute after Whieldon put Band clear on the right and the winger ran on to fire a fierce drive past Truro keeper Dennis Annear. Two minutes later Justin Ashburn’s persistence paid dividends as he forced the ball across the area for Cansfield to score and then, almost immediately, Wright’s free-kick from the edge of the area floated into the net past bemused Truro keeper Annear. There was no way back for Truro in the sultry heat as Falmouth and their supporters were left to celebrate a famous win, their fifth in a row over their great rivals. A typical local derby at Treyew Road on Tuesday night produced a fair result, if not really a satisfactory one for either side. Town, after the disappointment of their defeat at Tavistock, could really have done with all three points, but in the end had to settle for just one after coming from behind. Town are now some 19 points behind leaders Porthleven and although they do have five games in hand they face a daunting task to overhaul the Gala Parc club. On Tuesday evening they started as if they were going to power to the win as they rocked Truro back with a series of pacey attacks, though again lacking a cutting edge in front of goal. They forced Truro to concede a number of free-kicks with Darren Babb and John Burrows booked for the home side, though Town’s Dave Sweet and Paul Waters also went in referee Chapman’s notebook. But as the half wore on the game became more even and Waters did well to keep out a Mark Damerell effort after he rounded keeper Sid Taylor. Then eight minutes into the second half Town fell behind when Damerell played Justin Norman in on the right of the area and his powerful low shot gave Taylor no chance. Lee Fox and Adrian Street were booked as tempers frayed and Falmouth skipper Andrew Street went off injured, Paul Sidey taking his place. Town kept pushing forward and drew level after 69 minutes when Dale Band’s hooked cross found Andy Parr unmarked six yards out and he made no mistake. In an exciting finale both sides might have won the game but neither side were able to force the decisive goal. West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser

Falmouth Town fell to a 3-2 defeat away at Truro City on Saturday in the Aubrey Wilkes Trophy. Falmouth had upset the odds last Summer to take the trophy from their higher league opponents, but despite a promising performance at Treyew Road Kieffer Moore hit a spectacular winner to see Truro take the honours. It had started well for Truro as Stewart Yetton headed home a cross from Andy Watkins after only a few minutes to put the White Tigers into the lead. Unfortunately for Yetton he went off with a hamstring injury moments later to be replaced by Moore. Former Newcastle United player Wayne Quinn came close to an equaliser for Falmouth, but saw his free-kick rattle the crossbar. Dan Green, who swapped Falmouth for Truro this summer, then stole the ball off Jamie Devine before making a strong run into the opposition’s half and feeding a pass to Jake Ash who fired a shot past Jason Chapman to make it 2-0. Further chances fell for Andy Westgarth, of Falmouth, and Les Afful and Moore, of Truro, but it was a cross-shot from Dan Magee that found it’s way into the back of Truro’s net to make the score 2-1 at half-time. Falmouth then levelled the scores 12 minutes into the second half as Quinn curled a free-kick into the path of Matt Shiels, who stabbed the ball in from close range. However, it was Truro who were to take the trophy after Moore acrobatically volleyed home a cross with 14 minutes to go to make it 3-2. Falmouth Packet

Truro City boss Lee Hodges says it’s time for his players to get “nasty” after his side suffered a shock defeat against Falmouth Town on Saturday afternoon. The White Tigers’ defeat at Bickland Park against Falmouth, who play four levels below them, was City’s third in their last four friendly games. It was a match City would have expected to win, but they came up against a highly motivated Falmouth side eager to put one over their local rivals and regain the Aubrey Wilkes Trophy. Speaking after the game, City boss Hodges admitted he’s “a little bit disappointed” with the way his side is currently playing. “It’s a new, youthful group and are just a bit too nice. Last season we weren’t nice. As much as everyone says you are playing some lovely stuff, I don’t want to do that and lose. I want to get back to how I want us to be. I want us to be nasty, but not dirty. I want people to say to us I didn’t enjoy that, but you won 1-0. We have got to get them back on the training field to do that. Cornwall Live

Harlain Mbayo scored the winning goal as Truro City beat Falmouth Town to regain the Aubrey Wilkes Trophy. Rio Garside gave Truro the lead just before the break but Jack Bowyer levelled for Falmouth midway through the second half. But parity was brief as Mbayo headed in Garside’s cross from six yards two minutes later to seal victory. The game kicked into life in the ninth minute with Stewart Yetton heading just wide for the home side before Tim Nixon went up the end and shot at goal. His shot was saved by James Hamon and cleared off the line by Harrison Davis. Truro then enjoyed a spell of pressure with Yetton almost firing the hosts in front, before Moulaye Ndiaye headed wide from a corner. City centre-back James Ward almost managed a goal against his former side when the Truro man fired at goal at the back of the six-yard box, but Falmouth ‘keeper Steve Parker-Billinge was able to turn it away. But Garside opened the scoring in the 39th minute with an excellent individual goal, with his mazy run taking him past the visiting defence before he fired into the bottom corner. The hosts missed a big chance to extend their lead four minutes into the second half, with Garside firing Ryan Law’s low cross over the bar at the back post. Louis Rooney missed an even better chance to score minutes later when he was gifted the ball inside the box, but he was denied by Parker-Billinge. Those misses came back to haunt them as Town equalised midway through the half. Bowyer, fresh from the bench, won the ball inside the box and beat a defender before slamming the ball home. Town’s joy was short-lived as Truro instantly regained the lead. Garside sent in an excellent cross and Mbayo headed in from six yards. Town tried to equalise again but struggled to fashion any clear-cut chances, with Niall Thompson coming close with a 35-yard effort for Truro late on. Falmouth’s evening was completed when coach Charlie Davis was sent off by referee Stuart Kane towards the end. Falmouth Packet

Truro City eventually found their way past Falmouth Town to lift the Aubrey Wilkes Trophy in an exciting match at Bickland Park. A dominant City side were two goals up through Alex Battle and Tyler Harvey but Tim Nixon’s goal against the run of play halved the deficit at half-time. Town levelled through Jack Bowyer early in the second half, but Rocky Neal’s strike quickly restored the visitors’ lead, with the same man later converting a penalty before Dan Rooney added a fifth as Paul Wotton’s side retained the trophy they won back from Town 12 months ago. You could hardly tell it was City’s first pre-season friendly of the summer as they dominated right from the off, with Battle and Harvey having early efforts before Ryan Brett fired a free-kick over the bar. Battle and Jamie Richards both missed the target from close range midway through the half as the visitors turned the screw, before finally opening the scoring on 25 minutes with a goal fit to win any game. Battle picked up possession on the left-hand side of the box, before beating his man and unleashing a splendid curling effort out of Ryan Barnes’ reach and into the far corner. Truro kept up the pressure and a second goal arrived only seven minutes later. This time it was Battle’s fellow former Plymouth Argyle man to provide it as Shane White teed up Harvey to head home from six yards. Battle missed a good chance to nick a third before George Tucker looked to have done so with his strike, only to be denied by an excellent flying save from Barnes. Just when City were looking like putting the game out of sight, Town scored a goal out of nowhere minutes before half-time. A long throw from Luke Brabyn was not dealt with and it found its way to Nixon, who arrowed the ball past Dan Stedman from ten yards. Remarkably, Town found themselves back on level terms seven minutes into the second half, as Bowyer raced to meet a long ball over the defence before drilling it past substitute keeper James Hamon and into the far corner to score for the third Aubrey Wilkes Trophy match in a row. But parity lasted barely a minute as Truro attacked from the kick-off, with Stewart Yetton and Ryan Dickson forcing two saves from Barnes, but it was third time lucky as Neal powered home the rebound. TJ Walter spurned a big chance to make it 3-3 when he capitalised on Richards’ slip at the back but could not find a way past Hamon. That miss proved crucial as Truro restored their two-goal gap on 65 minutes after Kirk Davies was adjudged to brought down Yetton inside the box, with Neal sending Barnes the wrong way from the spot. In the blink of an eye it was five and game over as some good link-up play between a Truro trialist and Rocky Neal saw the latter cross to the far post where Rooney was on hand to rifle the ball home. The game was effectively over as a contest but both sides pushed for more as Neal’s cross almost caught out Barnes before Walter’s shot was well saved by Hamon, while Connor Riley-Lowe smashed a free-kick against Barnes’ bar. With time running out Walker tried the spectacular as he chested and volleyed at goal from nearly 30 yards, with his dipping effort landing on the roof of Hamon’s net. Falmouth Packet

On their first game back at Bickland Park in 2021 Falmouth Town lost 5-0 to Southern League outfit Truro City. The sides annually meet in the Aubrey Wilkes Trophy in pre-season and five first half goals for the visitors ensured they would take this years trophy. Ryan Brett scored twice alongside goals from Rio Garside, Tyler Harvey and Dan Rooney. The F Troop were out in full force, choosing the football over the beach but despite the scoreline they failed to be subdued, with loud chants creating a great atmosphere for Town’s second pre-season game of the season. Truro dominated the opening proceedings and took the lead in the 13th minute. A corner was cleared away only to former Plymouth Argyle midfielder Rooney, who skilfully managed to get the ball out of his feet and shoot through a crowd of bodies into the corner. Ryan Barnes in the Falmouth goal made a great save to deny Connor Riley-Lowe from close range in the 23rd minute. Moments later however, City doubled their lead as Brett beat his man and finished into the bottom corner. That was the first of a flurry of goals following a water break as Truro added two more within five minutes. Garside scored from inside the box following good work from Niall Thompson down the right side, before Brett added his second. A thunderbolt from twenty yards that flew into the top right corner. In the 36th minute Harvey got what was to be the last goal of the game after Town lost possession in their own third, the striker belted the ball into the open goal to send the side who currently play their home matches in Devon into a commanding lead. After the break Falmouth came out the stronger of the two sides but failed to make their chances count. Forward Alex Wharton was a thorn in the side of Truro constantly harassing the defenders. He forged a great opportunity to get the home side back in the game in the 55th minute. A nice interchange with Tim Nixon opened up space for the striker but his curling effort was well saved by James Hamon. Just as it looked like Falmouth were edging back into the game Truro won a penalty in the 65th minute when Niall Thompson was clumsily brought down. Harvey stepped up and powered his shot to the keepers right but Barnes did superbly well to parry the ball out and save the rebound. The heat began to take its toll on the players despite the drinks break as the game petered out, it allowed for the away side to coast to victory despite some late Falmouth pressure. Falmouth Town manager Andrew Westgarth, was disappointed with how his side played “I’d like to thank Paul (Wotton, Truro manager) for getting the fixture on, it is a good test for us, a good marker as to where we are at, we have had two friendlies which have been good for minutes in the legs but today was a real good gauge of where we are at. I thought we were disappointing today, we didn’t give a good account of ourselves and I’m disappointed with the goals we conceded.” Falmouth Packet

Truro City retained the annual Aubrey Wilkes Trophy with a 5-1 win over Falmouth Town at Bickland Park on Saturday. A brace each for Tyler Harvey and Jacob Grange plus a header from Rocky Neal supplied the goals for the Southern League side, while Falmouth’s goal was nailed in by last season’s top scorer Jack Bray-Evans. Town got play underway as Bickland Park baked in summer sunshine, but the visitors quickly began to take control of the annual fixture. Jack Rice forced Ryan Barnes into his first save of the match after four minutes, but his header was directly at the shot-stopper. On eight minutes Jack Webber was guilty of giving the ball away on the edge of his own box, but fortunately for the Falmouth man Rocky Neal could only direct an improvised effort over the far post. Neal fancied his chances from way out with a David Beckham like effort from near the half way line five minutes later but Barnes was on his toes to keep the ball out as Town struggled to get out in the early stages. The White Tigers eventually took the lead in a moment of controversy on 18 minutes. Harvey’s through ball attempted to find Neal but the onrushing attacker went down in a collision with Barnes as the referee pointed to the spot which divided fans. Despite this Harvey collected the ball and buried his powerful effort into the bottom left corner despite a hand from the keeper. Falmouth’s Wharton provided a sublime delivery into the penalty area after 22 minutes as Town looked for a response, but no one in the brand-new Falmouth black and amber kit could get on the end of the delivery. On the half hour Truro doubled their lead through a marvellous strike from Harvey. Truro’s new striker Dan Sullivan linked up with Neal before laying the ball back to the former Plymouth Argyle striker who unleashed a piledriver from 25 yards that belted its way into the bottom left corner to make it 2-0. After a water break play resumed as Truro threatened again when Tim Nixon cheaply gave the ball away in his own third. Sullivan unleashed an effort from range which was fumbled by Barnes, but the keeper recovered quickly to make a instinctive save from onrushing Neal. Truro then scored their last goal of the half in the 36th minute after Falmouth failed to clear their lines. Shane White got possession back for the visitors and whipped a ball perfectly onto the head of Neal who, despite being the smallest man on the pitch, had got between two centre backs to head into the back of the net. Town made no changes at half time as Truro changed three faces, despite the shuffle up Truro scored their fourth through one of the subs Jacob Grange. The young forward was well picked out by White before beautifully touching and half volleying into the bottom left corner past the helpless keeper in the 48th minute. Town had an excellent opportunity to reduce the deficit in the 52nd minute when Wharton earned Town a free-kick on the edge. Tom Annear stepped up to take the honours but sent his curling effort over the bar. Truro made seven changes on the hour mark while Falmouth gave half an hour to Jack Bray-Evans who hadn’t started due to illness earlier in the week. One of Truro’s changes Harrison had a turn and shot four minutes after his introduction, but his effort went wide of the mark. Truro’s Jordan Moyle was stretchered off in the next phase of play following a coming together with Wharton. When play resumed Town had another sighter as Annear had a close-range effort following a free-kick. But the defenders’ low prodded strike was well blocked by Morgan Coxhead in the 70th minute. Grange, seeking a second goal, played a neat one-two with Harrison after dispossessing Kirk Davies. His shot afterwards wasn’t as neat though as it was cleared away by the keeper. On 75 minutes Bray-Evans had his first sighter of the match but dragged his low effort left of the mark from a tight angle. But the Golden Boot winner of last season was celebrating six minutes later when he superbly brought down a long ball before smashing a left-footed bullet into the back of the net past the flailing Coxhead at the near post. Falmouth made two further changes as the minutes ticked down, but Truro would notch the last goal of the game as the match edged into stoppage time. Grange again was the scorer, ghosting in at the front post to plant a header into the corner. All that was left for Truro captain Connor Riley-Lowe to lift the trophy in what proved to be a good run out for both sides who continue preparations for the new season. Falmouth Packet
